About the Program

(Not Eligible for Financial Aid) The Certificate of Achievement in Music provides students with a broad foundation in music that will enable them to pursue a variety of musical paths including performance, composition, and music education. Students will develop performance skills through applied lessons and participation in ensembles, combined with a sequence of music theory and aural skills. Students who complete the curriculum can seek entry-level employment as music educators, performers, music assistants, or other aspects of the music industry. Prior to beginning the coursework in this program, students should have at least some experience in reading printed music and playing an instrument/voice.

Program Learning Outcome(s):

Upon successful completion of this program, the student will be able to:

  • Play their chosen instrument or sing at an advanced level.

  • Demonstrate the ability to either play or sing new music at sight.

  • Analyze a given piece of music in terms of chords and chord structure, modulation, cadences, and form.

  • Articulate the principles of playing in an ensemble.

  • Describe effective practice techniques.

  • Listen to a piece of music and identify its genre.
