This course is designed to introduce students to women's studies as an interdisciplinary field of knowledge that explores critical questions about the meaning of gender in society. Women's studies strives to provide equal education to both women and men by making the study of the history and culture of women and women's experiences, generally omitted from the traditional curriculum, the central focus of concentrated scholarship and learning. The purpose of the course is to involve students in the ongoing dialogue of women's experiences and women's socialization by gender, class, race, ethnicity, and culture. Gender scholarship critically analyzes themes of gendered performance and power in a range of social spheres, such as law, culture, education, work, medicine, social policy, the media, and the family. This course provides an introduction to intercultural communication in domestic and/or global contexts. Students will develop knowledge, attitudes, and skills to become more effective intercultural communicators. Students will explore the influence of cultures, languages, and social patterns on how members of groups relate among themselves and with members of different ethnic and cultural groups. The course also focuses on the theory and knowledge of effective communication within and between cultures, as well as the appreciation and comparison of communication among diverse groups within the larger context of American culture.
